Jallikattu – A Culturally rich Bull Fighting Sports Event of TamilNadu

Jallikattu or Manju Virattu is Bull Taming sport event played in the villages of Tamil Nadu during Pongal celebration. Every year the event is held normally from January to July. It is one of the most ancient sports event still existing in today’s world.


The term Jallikattu comes from the term Salli Kaasu (coins) and Kattu (meaning a package) tied to the horns of the bulls as the prize money. Alanganallur near Madurai, is one of the world famous place that organizes this event.

During this festival the bulls are decorated with the garlands and their horns are colored. Bundles containing money will be tied to the horns of the wild bulls and unarmed villagers have to squeeze the bundles from them. Moreover many prizes are announced during the event for the contestants.

 In Jallikattu, the bulls are not harmed as the matadors are not supposed to use any kind of weapon. The organizers will provide uniform to the contestants who are participating in the Event so as to avoid any outsiders. Proper Health checkups are done to both the Bulls and the contestants before the Event. Importance is also given to fix barricades to protect the spectators from the bulls.
